A surge of smaller, lower-priced handsets in the tablet market has led IDC to increase its 2013 forecast for the worldwide tablet market to 190.9 million, up from its previous forecast of 172.4 million units. One in every two tablets shipped this quarter was below 8 inches in screen size.
According to ABI Research media tablets are taking the market by storm and they predict that 145 million tablet devices will ship worldwide in 2013. They expect tablet sales to be driven by a combination of new market entrants, more affordable choices for consumers, and increased adoption by business users.
IDC has been surprised by surging Android tablet shipments and robust demand for Apple’s new iPad mini. As a result the IT analyst firm has had to increase its 2012 forecast for the worldwide tablet market.
